As a professional wedding photographer who has captured hundreds of couples over the years, I’m often asked one big question during planning calls: "Should we do a First Look?" Tradition says you shouldn’t see each other until that walk down the aisle. But after watching endless wedding timelines unfold from behind the lens, I can tell you firsthand that the traditional route often adds unnecessary stress. Having guided countless couples through their big days, I’ve seen time and time again how a First Look transforms the entire atmosphere of a wedding.
If you want a day that flows effortlessly, here is why doing a First Look is one of the absolute best decisions you can make.
1. You Get to Melt Away the Jitters
Wedding mornings move fast, and pre-ceremony nerves are very real. I've watched the most relaxed people turn into a bundle of anxiety right before stepping up to the altar. In my experience, the moment a couple gets to hug, laugh, and talk privately before the ceremony, the tension instantly evaporates. You get to reset together, which lets you actually enjoy the ceremony instead of just trying to survive the stage fright.
2. A Private Space for Genuine Reactions
During the ceremony, all eyes are on you. You can’t stop to tell your partner how stunning they look, grab a quiet kiss, or have a real conversation without an audience. Having captured every type of reaction imaginable, I know that a First Look gives you space for total authenticity—whether that means happy tears, jaw-dropping laughter, or a huge sigh of relief—without feeling like you're putting on a show for your guests.
3. A Stress-Free Photo Schedule (Trust the Expert on This One!)
From a technical and logistical standpoint, a First Look is a absolute game-changer. Here is what I’m able to create for my clients when we build in time before the ceremony:
Optimal Lighting: We get to schedule your romantic portraits when the natural light is at its absolute best, rather than rushing through them right as the sun sets.
More Variety: Without the clock ticking down to dinner, we have the freedom to relax and capture a wider range of creative, genuine portraits.
Knocking Out Group Shots Early: We can wrap up most—if not all—of your wedding party and family portraits before guests even arrive.
4. You Actually Get to Go to Your Own Cocktail Hour
This is usually the favorite perk for my couples. Without a First Look, the entire post-ceremony hour is crammed with family lists, bridal party photos, and romantic portraits. By the time you finish, the appetizers are gone and cocktail hour is over. When we do photos beforehand, you wrap up your ceremony, take a quick breath, and go straight to celebrating with a drink in hand alongside the people who traveled to see you.
"Will it ruin the walk down the aisle?"
This is the #1 concern clients bring to me, and my answer is always a resounding no. After shooting both traditional weddings and First Looks, I can tell you that walking down the aisle loses none of its magic. Seeing each other beforehand simply takes the edge off the panic, allowing you to be fully present and soak in every second of that walk.
My Advice: Your wedding day should be spent enjoying the person you’re marrying, not rushing from one photo setup to the next. If you want a seamless timeline, gorgeous portraits, and a much calmer wedding day, take it from someone who has seen it all: a First Look is worth every second.
